Process Paper

I was first introduced to NHD when my brother was an 8th grade. As a fourth grader at the time I was slightly overwhelmed by the sheer amount of projects. But As the years went on and I saw the NHD projects I noticed one thing every year. There were those topics that everybody chose. To me I found those projects quit redundant. So when I was introduced to the project at the beginning of this year I knew I wanted to do something unique. As a tennis player myself I had of billie jean king in the past but didn’t know much about her. But as I started to look into the possibility of my topic I knew it was the one because i looked up to Billie Jean after I had learned about her bravery in order to stand up for herself and all other women.

After I had choose my topic. I knew i needed basic background information and hearing of the semi recent release of the movie about the battle of the sexes i thought it would be a great way to kick off my project by watching the movie. The movie helped me get a good start and understanding about my project before I dove deeper. After I had got the basic information I started to look for websites and primary sources about specific things such as: What happened leading up to the match, how the public felt after the match and why Billie Jean King did what she did.

When it came to selecting my presentation type. I kinda already had my mind set up I did not want to do an exhibit because year after year I had walked around looking at the projects and all I saw was exhibits. So I knew exhibits was out of the picture so i looked into other options. I was drawn to doing a website because I enjoy using technology and doing graphic design. I also wanted to be able to show the many pictures from the match itself.

Billie Jean King faced a lot of barriers in her life and a lot of discrimination. She was not treated equally compared to her male counterparts and she knew she had to change that. She protested and spoke her voice in order to break through these barriers that she has had since birth. She didn’t just break through these barriers for herself but for all the other women in the world past, present, and future.
